The Launching of A Radical Overground
< Nov. 6 And 7 > XLterrestrials present CiTiZEN KiNO at Filmkunst im Roderich, Glogauer Str. 19 Berlin. Doors 21:00h. Event begins 21:30. (4 euro suggested donation).
We’ve been swimming or drowning in a Spectacle 2.0 for some time now.
XLterrestrials investigate new directions for extricating ourselves from
the occupied and highly mediated territories. To change The Operating
System in these dangerous times, requires a hybrid of 3 (at least)
methodologies: technological, political, and behavioral. The 3rd, as a
movement, has been given scant attention, and hasn’t been sufficiently
reframed, upgraded and/or hacked since the “techno phantasms” began to colonize the social ecology.
We will begin constructing a “Digital Dogme” ( 2010/11 )
project – a psychomedia self-defense plan … and actions for communities on the rise! As Bruce Lee might say, we make the flow of water ours to overcome an enemy which surrounds us.
MORE on the philosophy and strategy for Citizen Kino, cont.
The XLterrestrials, a collective of tactical media educators, present CiTiZEN KiNO, an initiative to mobilize local neighborhoods to reclaim and utilize the power of cinema + mass media + realtime creativity to address urgent social issues.
CiTiZEN KiNO comes to your local theaters, community centers, schools, parks and your favorite (dying?) cinemas to completely rearrange the “media landscape” + the “over-mediated neighborhoods” to awaken your desires for deeper levels of social engagement.
A small cast / team of XLterrestrial “psychomedia analysts” and “arts + praxis specialists” will present a collection of current media clips (in a newsreel style, w/ live moderation) to initiate discussions on subjects ranging from the new media activism to local strategies for a variety of sustainability themes + actions.
40% films, 60% engaged dialogue, reacting and solution-based planning. CiTiZEN KiNO is a new screening praxis which de-emphasizes the screen and the passive download culture. We provide an open-source model of re-inventing a town-hall style gathering which utilizes film, video and the internet, not as an end objective, not as consumption, but as tools to inspire actions! And we encourage people at each location to expand upon the D-I-Y formula as an ongoing series of events!
One of the most disempowering factors of mass media today is that we are over-saturated with news, info and entertainment, and we are losing the ability to transform all the input into social output. XLts have been researching these disabling factors of media for a number of years ( we call it ” Virtual Migration ” ) and are now experimenting with ways to make it more relevant to our daily lives and envisioning a more community-centered future.
Recently at the alternative Copenhagen Klima Forum, concerned citizens arrived upon a very telling new directive. Attending to such social challenges today is less about fighting symptoms such as climate change than about creating a “system change”. Our work with arts + media in a variety of formats have given us some unique perspective to unravel one of the root causes of our individual and civic disenfranchisement.
CiTiZEN KiNO is designed to go to the heart of changing “operating systems” because it works with the dominant code of current social organization, and brings us and our communities back from the abstract, the virtual, the disorienting and endless elsewheres. We rebuild the value and sum experience of group participation in realtime social situations.
Note: CiTiZEN KiNO takes its name from one of the more pioneering media makers of the 20th century. It has been noted by many that Citizen Kane may be one of the greatest films of all time, but one is seldom reminded that Orson Welles most spectacular feat was that he managed to critique and deconstruct the life of one of the most powerful media moguls of the times, via a roman a clef, a story about real events and real people under the disguise of fictional characters. Perhaps from a media activist perspective today, one might see it as a soft attack. But as part of a body of work, he broke through the barriers of media control on numerous occasions in radio, theater and film, and can be considered the godfather of media pranksterism and culture jamming.
