From “We are Winning” to “What Would it Mean to Win?” to …

Oliver Ressler and Zanny Begg’s film “What Would It Mean To Win?” begins with a preface from John Halloway (above) standing amidst the tents of one of the Heiligendamm (G8/07) camp sites quoting a Zapatista-lobbed poetic illumination (a la Marcos) about living a life that would be like choosing a different film to watch every day, as opposed to the predicament of the indigenous having been forced to exist in the same film for the last 500 years.

The future is unwritten. Even as we are clearly winning some battles and bleeding profusely from others lost, and what would it look like if we showed up for the next round elsewhere and in a completely other form, another script, outside the usual pattern, far away from the barbed fences and the spectacles of power ??

What was it exactly that anyone really wanted in the remote fields of Heiligendamm anyway?? What did we want at Lake Toya on a remote island off the Japanese mainland ?? What would it be like to NOT gather for a sequel on the isle of Berlusconi-land in 2009 ?? but elsewhere…
